Before engaging to a fight (mobs), you must first check if you can take him/her on!
The "Check" Command
The "Check" command can be found in the Command Menu that pops up when you select a target, or by using /check or CTRL+C. It allows you to view the level and equipment on other players, and gauge the strength of enemies.
Using the check command on enemies allows one to ascertain a rough idea of the enemy's relative strength and how many experience points will be obtained when the enemy is defeated. One of the following messages is displayed:
Too Weak to be Worthwhile (TW)
Extremely Easy Prey (EEP)
Easy Prey (EP)
Decent Challenge (DC)
Evenly Match (EM)
Tough (T)
Very Tough (VT)
Incredibly Tough (IT)
Impossible to Gauge! (IG)
You can kill/defeat mobs with checks of TW upto DC with ease, mobs as EM you might have some trouble.
From T to IG, I suggest for you, not to engage, not unless you have a whole party behind you.
Kinds of Mobs
There are two different kind of mobs in FFXI, first is the mobs that checks as Too Weak to Incredibly Tough, second is the mobs that checks as Impossible to Gauge, these are special monsters also known as "Notorious Monsters" (NM).
Notorious Monsters are rare enemies that will read as "Impossible to Gauge" when checked. They are typically unique, with only one appearing in the area, and are often much tougher than other monsters in the area. There are a variety of useful items that are dropped exclusively by Notorious Monsters, but not all Notorious Monsters drop items - those generated by quests and missions will often not drop anything at all, but must be defeated to progress through the quest.
Many Notorious Monsters possess powerful or unique abilities, such as the two-hour ability of their job, and may have other unusual traits or behavior. Some especially powerful Notorious Monsters also have True Sight or True Hearing, allowing them to detect characters under the effects of invisible and sneak.
NMs can be a boss in a mission or a quest, can be timed pop, forced pop, lottery pop, or in a battlefield by condition.
Mob Behavior
There are three kinds of behavior a mob can have, one is non-aggressive which will not attack you unless you attack them first, example of this are those mob that checks as TW to EP.
The second mob behavior is aggressive, which will attack you if it detects you, either by sight, sound, smell, or even while you are casting a spell, mostly those mobs that checks as DC to IG.
To prevent being detected, you can use items such as Prism Powder which will make you invisible, Silent Oil for silencing your footsteps, Deodorizer to hide your smell, these status effect can also be obtained using spells or abilities, Sneak, Invisible, and Deodorize for white magic, Monomi: Ichi (Sneak) and Tonko: Ichi/Ni (Invisible) for Ninjutsu, and Spectral Jig which is an ability of a Dancer. There are enchanted equipment that can also give you this status effect, like Sneaking Boots and Dream Boots+1 for Sneak, Invisible Mantle and Skulker's Cape for Invisible. Third behavior is called Link, most mobs that belongs in the same group of family will have this behavior, they will help each other as long as they are in range, regardless if you got aggro'ed or you engaged a mob.
Notorious Monsters however, they have a special kind of detection which called as "True Detection", so regardless of you having a sneak, invisible, or deodorize, the NM will still be able to detect you.
